BIPVBuilding Integrated PhotoVoltaics — integrated photovoltaics

TL;DR

BIPV (Building Integrated PV) refers to solar modules which replace elements of the building envelope (tiles, slates, facades, glass roofs) rather than being installed on top. More aesthetic, often eligible for a Pronovo premium, but 20–40% more expensive.

Definition

BIPV (Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics) refers to photovoltaic systems integrated as constituent elements of the building envelope — roof, facade or glazing — simultaneously ensuring the production of electricity and the waterproofing or protection function.

Technical explanation

Unlike 'BAPV' systems (Building Applied PV, panels installed on existing roof), BIPV replace the roofing or facade material. Examples: solar tiles (Tesla Solar Roof or Eternit Solaris type), photovoltaic slates, semi-transparent solar glazing, facade cladding with integrated cells. The efficiency is often slightly lower (19–21%) than standard modules because the rear ventilation is less good. Pronovo treatment of integrated systems depends on the scale and criteria in force; check the tariff calculator at time of quote.

Swiss context

In Switzerland, BIPV is particularly relevant for listed buildings (authorities often accept aesthetic BIPV solutions where standard panels would be refused), high-end renovation projects and new Minergie constructions. Suppliers active in French-speaking Switzerland: Eternit (Solaris tiles), Roofit Solar, Schweizer (roofing systems).

FAQs — BIPV

Are solar tiles as efficient as panels?+

Slightly less: 19–21% efficiency vs. 21.5–22.5% for modern TOPCons. Poorer ventilation reduces performance in hot weather. But for an entire roof, the larger surface area partially compensates for the difference in performance.

Is BIPV permitted on listed buildings?+

Often yes, this is even the main advantage of BIPV: heritage protection commissions accept solar tiles (which look like classic tiles) more easily than standard panels. Each case is judged individually.
