A mosaic of local aid rather than a federal plan
Unlike some of its European neighbors, Switzerland (Confederation) does not distribute a direct “check” for the purchase of a new electric vehicle. For a private terminal, possible support comes mainly from the cantons, municipalities or energy distributors. The landscape changes with annual budgets, the buildings concerned and the technical rules.
The principle of infrastructure aid
When assistance exists, it often targets reliable charging at home, especially in PPE, rental property or collective garage. It can take the form of a fixed amount, a capped share of the common infrastructure or a technical condition linked to load management. Do not withhold any percentage from your budget without an official page or written confirmation.
Points to check in French-speaking Switzerland
The amounts change quickly according to annual budgets. Before starting the work, check at least FrancsEnergie, the page of your municipality and the energy distributor:
- Geneva: check the mobility, SIG and municipal programs, distinguishing between private terminals, PPE and soft mobility.
- Vaud: first check the municipality and the local distributor; some support may target collective infrastructure rather than individual terminals.
- Valais, Neuchâtel, Fribourg: check if the help concerns the riser, the collective garage, load control or only certain buildings.
Please note: “Smart Chargers” are required
To prevent a neighborhood blackout, virtually all grants require the installation of "smart terminals" (capable of suspending charging or adapting power if the local network becomes unstable or overloaded). Low-end standard terminal models (non-communicating via OCPP or Modbus TCP) are often disqualified and do not receive the subsidy. Check this point with your Swiss installer or electrician!
Tax deductibility (The hidden bonus)
As for an energy renovation (solar panels, heat pump), the Confederation allows, in a majority of cantons (Vaud, Geneva included) to **deduct the costs of the charging infrastructure (station + partial wiring)** from the income of the personal tax declaration, under certain conditions: the installation must be classified as a measure in favor of the rational use of energy within the meaning of the law.
This deduction depends directly on your marginal tax rate (and can very often represent several hundred francs saved at the end of the installation year). Discuss it with your tax adviser during the photovoltaic installation project!
