1. LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) vs NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt)
LFP and NMC are two lithium-ion battery chemistries. LFP is common in home storage; NMC can be more compact at the same capacity. No chemistry eliminates all risk of fire or thermal runaway. Choose a suitable system with its protection equipment and have the installation location, permitted temperatures, warranty and cycle conditions checked for the exact model.
2. High Voltage (HV) vs Low Voltage (LV) Battery
At equal power, higher voltage means lower current, but voltage alone does not predict system efficiency. Compare round-trip losses, usable capacity, continuous power and inverter compatibility using the exact model datasheets.
3. AC-coupled vs DC-coupled architecture
DC-Coupled: The battery plugs directly into the hybrid inverter before the power is converted to AC. This is the norm for new installations. Cheaper, less material, higher yield.
AC-Coupled: The battery (Enphase IQ Battery or Tesla Powerwall type) has its own integrated inverter and is connected to the main electrical panel (230V). Ideal for adding storage to an existing installation without a hybrid inverter.
4. The flagship models in Switzerland (2026)
Huawei LUNA2000 and BYD Battery-Box have different configurations; capacity, expansion and compatibility depend on the model and inverter. Enphase IQ Battery uses an AC architecture with compatible communication and control equipment. Envoy/IQ Gateway is a communication gateway, not a microinverter. Compare warranties applicable in Switzerland without assuming one brand always has the longest coverage.
5. Is the battery profitable ecologically or financially?
Profitability depends on the difference between avoided grid cost and surplus remuneration, after losses, fees and ageing. Compare tariffs for your address, installed cost and simulated cycles. Calculate payback for the specific project. Backup during an outage requires suitable equipment and installation; having a battery alone does not provide it.
