Modernizing is not the same as starting from scratch
Many Swiss owners have installations installed 10, 15 years ago or 20 years. In the meantime, uses have changed: heat pump, vehicle electric, increase in self-consumption sought, battery envisaged, or simply inverter failure. Repowering is used to restore the system in line with these new needs.
The key is to avoid two mistakes: replacing equipment too early useful, or maintain for too long an architecture that blocks the value of project.
The method in 5 steps
Carry out a technical audit of the existing
Record the installed power, the age of the modules, the inverter model, remaining warranties, diagram electrical and historical production data. Without this basis, it is impossible to know if the problem is mechanical, electrical or simply economical.
Repowering begins with a faithful photo of the current installation.
Identify the actual weak link
Sometimes, the inverter reaches the end of its life while the panels remain relevant. In other cases, the roof still has free space but the architecture does not make it easy to extend the power.
It is necessary to isolate the point which limits the performance or use value before buying anything.
Define your new energy needs
An installation sized for a car-free household electric nor heat pump can become underrated for a few years later. Repowering must therefore start from the future consumption profile, not from the past.
If your goal is now self-consumption, adding an EMS, battery or new hybrid inverter can sometimes make more sense than the replacement of modules alone.
Compare three numerical scenarios
Ask for at least a targeted repair scenario, a extension or partial replacement scenario, and a complete overhaul scenario. Each option must include cost, expected production, future compatibility and impact on operations.
It is this comparison that avoids the cheap fake and overinvestment.
Plan the procedures and intervention schedule
Any serious modernization must integrate coordination with the installer, network manager, possible meter adjustments and constraints of security. It is also necessary to choose a period which limits the loss of production during work.
Good repowering is as much about sequencing as it is of material.
What a good repowering really changes
The best-case scenario doesn't just give more kWh. It also improves visibility on production, compatibility with new uses of the fireplace, the maintainability of the system and the value of the installation for the next ten years.
