FAQ Connection and administrative procedures in Switzerland

GRD, ESTI, permits, deadlines — understand everything without stress

TL;DR

Prepare the procedures with the installer, municipality and DSO. Identify documents, approvals, responsibilities and the sequence before ordering.

01

Who should I contact first for my solar project?

Gather the address, bills and roof information, then contact an installer and identify the relevant DSO. Ask who prepares municipal notification, connection application, electrical inspection and Pronovo documents. Each task and its cost must appear in the quote or a written mandate.
02

How long does the connection to the network take?

Timing depends on the DSO, complete application, capacity and any network or meter work. Request a written estimate for your address and the stages needed before commissioning. Clarify who handles requests for further information and how delays affect the works and deposits.
03

What is a bidirectional counter?

It measures grid imports and exports separately. The DSO defines the metering required for the planned configuration. Confirm the meter, installation, cost, accessible data and commissioning approval; collective arrangements do not all use a single meter.
04

Does my installer have to be approved by the GRD?

Electrical work covered by the low-voltage installation ordinance must take place under the appropriate ESTI authorization. Check the responsible business, partners and required inspections. The DSO sets connection requirements. The owner or representative can submit the Pronovo application, which does not replace electrical authorization.
05

Can we use the panels before official connection?

Do not commission a grid-connected installation before the required approvals, protection and inspections. Even when no export is planned, electrical work and connection must comply with the DSO procedure and low-voltage installation ordinance. Have the commissioning sequence and required documents confirmed in writing.
06

What happens if I change electricity supplier?

Supplier choice depends on market eligibility and contract. The physical DSO remains tied to your address. Electricity purchases and surplus sales have separate conditions. Before switching, check the purchase contract, export tariff, guarantees of origin, fees and deadlines rather than assuming everything stays unchanged.
