Technical explanation

The grid operator is determined by the network area serving your address. Households and other small consumers using less than 100 MWh per year currently cannot freely choose their electricity supplier; they receive basic supply. Grid operation and electricity supply are distinct functions. Check connection, metering and surplus remuneration for your address.

Swiss context

Main DSOs in French-speaking Switzerland: SIG (Geneva, the entire canton), Romande Energie (Vaud, Valais, Fribourg partially), EWZ partially, Industrial Services of various municipalities. The connection time varies from 4 to 12 weeks depending on the DSO and the workload.

FAQs — GRD

Should I contact my DSO to install solar panels?+

Yes. The installer generally does this for you: he submits the connection request to the DSO, who sends a technician to install/configure the bidirectional meter before commissioning.

Can the DNO refuse to connect my installation?+

Legally no, unless your installation exceeds the capacities of the local network (rare in residential settings). In practice, the DSO may request technical adaptations (NA protection, meter type).
