Solar inverterCentral or hybrid DC→AC converter

TL;DR

The inverter converts the direct current (DC) produced by your panels into alternating current (AC) that can be used in your home. It is the brains of your solar installation. Its quality and compatibility with the battery determine 40% of the value of your system.

Definition

The solar inverter (inverter) is the central component of a photovoltaic installation: it converts the direct current (DC) produced by the panels into alternating current (AC) compatible with the domestic network and the electricity network. A hybrid inverter also integrates a battery charger.

Technical explanation

A standard string inverter includes one or two MPPTs (Maximum Power Point Trackers) — algorithms that continually search for the optimal operating point of the string of panels. In case of partial shading, all panels of a string are affected. The hybrid inverter integrates a DC-DC charger for the battery, a flow management system (network, panels, battery, consumption) and often a communication interface (Wi-Fi, Ethernet). The efficiency of a good string inverter is 97-98.5% — higher than microinverters (95-96%) but without the advantage of independence per module.

Swiss context

In Switzerland, inverters must comply with applicable standards and DSO connection conditions; electrical work must be carried out by an authorized company. Common brands in French-speaking Switzerland include Huawei, Fronius and SMA. The choice of inverter determines the choice of battery — check compatibility first.

FAQs — Solar inverter

How long does a solar inverter last?+

A standard inverter has a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, less than that of panels (25-30 years). It is likely that you will need to replace your inverter once during the life of your installation. The replacement cost (CHF 1 000-2 500) must be included in your profitability calculation.

Should I choose a hybrid or standard inverter?+

If you're considering a battery now or within 5 years, go straight for a hybrid — adding a battery to a standard inverter costs more than buying a hybrid outright. If you're not interested in storage at all, a standard inverter will suffice. In 2026, most installers will immediately recommend the hybrid given the increase in battery prices.

Does the inverter work in the event of a grid outage?+

A standard inverter, no — it shuts down for safety to protect grid technicians. A hybrid inverter with battery can operate in islanding mode (backup), but only if this function is activated and the battery is charged. The Enphase IQ8 is the only microinverter that can operate off-grid (in Island mode).
